Heroes — Andrei Tarkovsky

Andrei Tarkovsky on the set of Stalker

Andrei Tarkovsky made very few films. All seven he made after graduation from film school were great:

I think Andrei Rublev is one of the very greatest films ever made. The following still from it is a beautiful symbol to anyone who has seen the movie.

Creativity is a recurring theme in his Andrei Rublev, and the long final sequence in it, depicting Borishka making the bell, has become for me a statement about what it means to be an artist.

Borishka’s reaction to the bell’s completion moves me profoundly.

This post, continuing a series of seven, is unabashed hero worship. A few years ago, making up an earlier version of this page, I decided that among all the filmmakers I’ve liked, there were seven who really especially blow me away.

I’ve had time to think since, and haven’t changed my mind. There are plenty of “honorable mentions” I love, but there are seven who are extra special and this is one of them.
